Hillclimb racing is most popular in mountainous areas where the terrain is the steepest, however, the sport is becoming more and more popular throughout the snow belt. In areas not blessed with "real" mountains, hillclimb events are held at ski resorts. Pilots navigate their long-track snowmobiles one at a time up the near- vertical face of a mountain. The riders with the fastest times up and over the top continue to qualify. Ultimately, the driver with the fastest time in the final round of each class is named "King of the Hill". The expertise and finesse required to navigate sleds over the top, as well as the heart stopping tumbles down the hill of the riders and sleds that don't make it to the top, make this form of snowmobile racing a fan favorite.
